After some harsh negotiations, Benjamin and Neil had almost reached an agreement. Neil and his group would perform all the surveillance they could on the vampires and provide Benjamin with the information they gathered. In exchange, Neil would publish the surveillance tapes on his blog after the situation was resolved, thereby ensuring none of the humans would be in danger from the vampires. Neil was unmoving on Benjamin’s next stickling point. If Benjamin did not need to kill the fledglings then Neil was not to publish the videos at all. While Benjamin truly didn’t care about the fate of the fledglings, publishing videos of vampires on the blog could lead to trouble for all supernaturals in the city. There was no telling who might see the footage. The last thing the city needed was for a group of vigilantes to decide they would eradicate vampires or, worse, for seers to come across the videos. That would be catastrophic to all demons in Toronto.

“No deal,” Neil said. “You just said we could still potentially be in danger if these vampires detected us. You expect us to put ourselves in harm’s way and do all this work for you and then possibly not be able to reap any kind of reward for doing so? No way. That’s not fair.”

“And I have agreed to supply you with whatever additional equipment you may need, equipment I’ve said you could keep afterwards. I have considerable resources that can get you the most advanced electronics available. I believe that should be compensation enough.”

“No. I need more.”

Shannon, Quarter, and Sonja had taken turns playing moderator between the two strong personalities. Jordan had gone outside for ‘some fresh air’, apparently thinking the rest of them believed him. The three exchanged looks now, seeing who had an idea to break the newest stalemate.

“What if Benjamin provided you with information about vampires?” Shannon suggested.

“Like what for instance?” Neil asked.

“Yes, like what?” Benjamin questioned. What was brewing in Shannon’s head now? He was at a loss to explain how she had convinced him to bargain with Neil in the first place. Now she seemed intent on prodding him into a deeper deal with Neil, something he wasn’t about to undertake. There was an obvious advantage in having more eyes at his disposal but Neil’s demands were too much and Benjamin would not give in to them, no matter what Shannon thought of it.

“Actually I thought about something you said earlier,” Shannon said, “about how if Neil really wanted to help people with his blog he should provide information to them so they could protect themselves against demons and vampires.”

“And?”

“What if you provided that information to Neil so he could share it? You could tell him how humans could stay safe and he could publish it. You believe that not many people believe in the things on Neil’s blog so there isn’t any harm there. And those who do believe will receive valuable information and Neil can be happy he provided it to them.
